Oracle Data Conversion and Migration Strategies
Course Description
During this workshop you will learn how to lead a data conversion project that’s run as part of a first time Oracle implementation or re-implementation. You will learn the concepts required to manage and control Oracle data conversion projects, define the best strategies for your environment, and shape the most effective approaches. You will also discover how to identify, monitor, and ultimately mitigate the risks that befall data conversion projects.

Whether you execute your Oracle data conversion project with your own staff, or you hire an outside firm to convert your data for you, this workshop will give you the knowledge and experience you need to ensure that your data conversion project successfully finishes on time and on budget.
Course Overview
By the End of the Course You Will:
  • Be prepared to decide whether need to upgrade or re-implement your E-Business Suite
  • Understand the complexities inherent to each data entity that needs to be converted in Oracle Financials and Oracle Manufacturing
  • Be able to define a sequence of data conversions, based on the dependencies that exist within your data
  • Know how to evaluate the best conversion approach to take for each data entity, considering data volume, quality of the information and number of validations required
  • Learn how to estimate the time required to develop, debug and run each one of the data conversions
  • Understand how to validate data conversion projects
  • Be ready to plan the cut-over activities before the Go-Live

Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills

  • Basic project management skills (schedule development, effort estimations, risk management)
  • Basic Oracle Applications Financials and Manufacturing functional knowledge
  • Basic understanding of Oracle Database and Oracle Tools (SQL, PL/SQL)
Course Agenda
  DAY 1
  • Discuss the business reasons that justify a decision to migrate or re-implement your Oracle E-Business Suite
  • Review technical information related to R12 upgrades
    • versions that allow a direct upgrade to Oracle Release 12
    • execution times
    • technical pre-requisites for an R12 upgrade
  • Discuss functional issues about data entities to convert for Oracle’s Financials and Manufacturing modules, including:
    • approaches
    • pre-requisite setups
    • common functional risks
  • Review the data conversion sequence. Determine which objects to convert first, based on the functional and technical dependencies

  DAY 2
  • Discover your alternatives for converting data:
    • data load
    • automatic conversion from a text file
    • from an Excel file,
    • using database-links
    • using staging tables
  • Review some example of a data conversion using each of the different approaches described above
  • Validating data conversion activities
  • Estimating  the time needed to build data conversion scripts, based on method used. Methodologies discussed include:
    • the Oracle AIM estimating method
    • re-use of components
  • Adjusting adjust accelerator packages to your environment - how much effort should you expect

  DAY 3
  • Review the migration of customizations and Oracle Module extensions.
  • Product families with the biggest changes in Oracle Release 12
  • Understanding the most common changes in Oracle Release 12
  • Estimating the effort to adjust your customizations with respect to data conversion
  • Discover the advantages of using a source version control system to keep track of code changes during data conversion
  • Key data conversion considerations for each CRP cycle
  • The impact of data conversion on Cut-Over activities - how to plan your Cut-Over to arrive at a seamless, successful Go-Live
  • Review the best templates to use during an Oracle data conversion project
